The Rooty Hill High School Debating Club and Teams provide students with a great outlet for:

  • testing opinions and formulating arguments
  • learning how to support ideas using relevant
  • real-world examples
  • connecting with other motivated students.

There are positions and competitions available for students of all year groups, particularly students who have passionate opinions and the motivation to develop empathy and critical thinking skills.

Debaters interact with team mates, building confidence and public speaking abilities to enhance their understanding of relevant issues in today’s society. They also have opportunities to travel around Sydney and interact with students from different schools and areas.

The Rooty Hill High School debating teams are involved in debating competitions and workshops including:

  • the NSW Premier’s Debating Challenge
  • state-wide programs offered by The Arts Unit
  • programs offered by universities in the Sydney region

Debaters are also offered the opportunity to trial for selection to represent the school in the Junior Legacy Public Speaking Award Competition and the Plain English Speaking Award Competition.

School debating teams have had important learning experiences and victories over the last few years including two RHHS students selected as a part of the Western Sydney Zone Junior State Debating team in both 2014 and 2015.

Any students who are interested in debating and would like to learn more are invited to attend the weekly lunchtime meetings with Ms Dolling. These meetings are held every Thursday during lunch in A001. Listen out for announcements on assembly, or speak to Ms Dolling in the English staff room to access the Google Classroom code.
We’d love to see you at our next meeting!
